This year 6th, 7th and 8th grade students participated in the American Mathematics Competition. Eight Hicksville Middle School students were recently honored for their high scores on the American Mathematics Competition exam. Congratulations to Michael, Daniel, Alexa Gomez, Parujit, Patrick, Pariket, Jason, and Eric, who were among the highest scorers. Patrick earned Gold status as the top scorer at HMS.

Spelling Bee Cover
Middle School Spelling Bee

The finals of the building level Spelling Bee were recently conducted on January 15th. Twenty-two students qualified to compete in the final round. After 21 intense rounds, seventh grade student, Siddh, emerged as the building winner. Siddh is a student in Ms. Wilson’s class. This year’s runner up is Sahag, who is also in seventh grade. Siddh will compete at St. Joseph’s College at the regional competition of the Scripp’s Spelling Bee.

Each year students display their knowledge of geography in the National Geographic Geography Bee. Hicksville Middle School students competed in the bee, which was coordinated by social studies teacher, Mr. Kerley. Students first competed in class and then class winners went on to the next round of the school level bee, which was recently held. Each grade level produced one winner. The three grade level winners competed in a final round. This year the overall building winner was Eric.

NJHS Helps Clean Up Oyster Bay

On September 15th, Hicksville Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society and advisor, Mrs. Smith, volunteered at the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup Day. Students came together to complete a cleanup of the beaches and shoreline areas by the Oyster Bay harbor. Giving back to the community is one of NJHS’ primary goals. Students agreed that they will also reap the benefits of their efforts as they, too, live in Oyster Bay and many frequent this particular beach.

Students were recognized in speeches delivered by Dr. Carl Bonuso, Superintendent of Schools, Brenda Judson, Vice President of the Board of Education, Mara Jorisch, Principal, Elissa Shapiro, PTSA President, Logan Boiko, Student Council President, and Kayla Matthew National Junior Honor Society President.
